Volunteer work at the museum
The museum does not receive public funding and can therefore only exist with the help of all the committed volunteers.
What can you expect as a volunteer?
New volunteers at the Ships on Holmen museum
The museum wants all volunteers working at the museum to have a good knowledge of what is reasonably expected of a "volunteer" and that all volunteers know what they can expect from the museum. Therefore, we have compiled some important information here on these pages for you.
The museum uses a fixed procedure when new volunteers are received to ensure that new volunteers are of course received in the best possible way.
Under this, new volunteers must meet and be welcomed by representatives from the museum and the three associations that collaborate with the museum: Danish Torpedo Boat Association, Danish Submarine Association and Peder Skram's Friends.
The new volunteers are invited to a tour at an introductory day before the annual opening.
A new volunteer who will work as a guide will, as mentioned, be assigned a mentor.
All volunteers are encouraged to work on all three ships.
Being a guide
Of course, it is about all guests with all their very different prerequisites – expecting a positive and welcoming atmosphere!
They want to gain new knowledge and, above all, want to have a really good experience – which only volunteers can give to the guests.
Guides should therefore be smiling and welcoming. Remember that a smile is the shortest distance between two people.
Be seen.
Be where the guests are, on board the ships or on the quay next to them.
Go to meet them when they arrive and welcome them.
The more questions the guests can get answered, the better the experience they have had.
Tell the good story. Tell about the challenging, exciting, boring, funny and historical episodes that the ships have been a part of. Also your own experiences are welcome (if you were there ).
It is recommended that a guide never “interpret” facts about the history.
We all have our own perception of how and not least why things happened, but it is often best to keep our own perceptions to ourselves.
Therefore, it is recommended that a guide always stick to the facts when telling stories.
Our own political beliefs and interpretations of decisions made by then/current politicians or officers are of no interest to the guests.
The museum only exists if we have guests.
Therefore, we must all give each guest the best possible experience, every time!
Being recommended by previous guests is the best recommendation we can get.
A negative experience for a guest, on the other hand, can harm the museum far in the future...
